Following the huge response garnered from the first session, the second session was conducted this week. This time, we planned to go deeper into current affairs. In addition to that, the awareness quotient will be provided though discussions on 'Fundamentals of Strategies and Consulting'.
The current affairs part concentrated on 3 main events that occurred / occurring. First was the case of Reebok Fraud. A complete timeline of events that occurred following the sacking of Reebok MD, India - Mr Subhinder Singh by Adidas without any reason were jotted down. All facts and figures pertaining were presented and the case was deftly dealt by our own Soumitra (II year, VGSoM).
Secondly, the latest buzz - 'Coalgate' -> the coal mining scam, was taken up. The background of the controversy, how it all started, the CAG reports, Government's stand and the latest developments and proceedings were discussed. The arguments and counter arguments of each side were elaborated. The entire thread was covered without any area to be left. Refer the ppt below to get the gist of overall discussion on the matter.
The final aspect discussed was the Goods and Services Tax (GST). The GST is an indirect tax that would replace existing
levies such as excise duty, service tax and value-added tax (VAT). The states
and the federal government will impose the tax on almost all goods and services
produced in India or imported. Exports will not attract GST. Having said enough, we told why the Government wants to have it in the first place, what will be the shortcomings for the State Governments and what is the reaction of the various players involved with this.
Now, have a look at the below ppt that has key points on the discussions above.
After this, 'Fundamentals of Strategy & Consulting' was taken up by Sanjay (II year, VGSoM). He shared much knowledge on the topic and the first year students got better understanding about them. He also went on to explain the Porter's five forces analysis and Porter's value chain concepts.
Then, he moved on to consulting and talked about the companies that do consulting. The MBB (Mckinsey, BCG and Bain) are the heavyweights all over the world. The Big 4 firms are Deloitte, KPMG, PWC and Ernst&Young. The various profiles that companies would offer in consulting stream was told. They are Strategic Consulting (the leaders are MBB), SCM Consulting, IT Consulting, Business Consulting and HR Consulting - everything explained in detail. The first year students found the topics very interesting and knowledgeable.
Overall, the session was well received and the efforts of everyone - the contributors, value-adders and participants was appreciated.
As we say again and again, knowledge unshared is like a precious gem locked inside a box, no one using it. Share the knowledge, spread the awareness and keep quizzing!
